POWER STEERING MODEL IN ELUMALAI POLYTECHNIC COLLEGE
Power steering is
a mechanical device that reduces the
human’s effort of turning the steering, turning the vehicle and reduces the
driver’s effort required for steering to turn the steering wheel. The
Four Final year students of the Diplomain Automobile Engineering (2019-22 Batch) have taken great efforts to
make a model of this power Steering and tested it in the existing vehicle
(Maruti Omni) in Elumalai Polytechnic College
Automobile Lab. It worked well.
This power
steering unit is located at the lower end of the steering column
in place of the usual conventional steering gear. It is connected by
two oil lines to the hydraulic pump mounted on the generator. The pump
with a relief valve avoids excessive oil pressures. The work was appreciated by
the Management, Principal and HODs of Elumalai Polytechnic College.

Advantages of Power Steering
1. It prevents the wheel from transferring the loading to the
steering column.
2. Power steering reduces driver fatigue.
3. It lowers the input torque and continuous steering function.
4. In power steering, the oil output is directly proportional to
steer speed.
Disadvantages of Power Steering
1. The design of the power steering is complicated.
2. Power steering is more costly than the manual steering
3. It has a fluid leakage problem.
Conclusion
In vehicles, a power steering system
helps operators to steer the vehicle by increasing the steering force required
to turn the steering wheel, making it easier for the vehicle to turn or move.
